Douglas Mercer & Son Funeral Directors have been an integral part of St. Leonards’ local community since 1897. Douglas ‘Pop’ Mercer originally started up the funeral business from his family home in Alma Terrace, St Leonards.
As his business grew and he needed more room, he acquired premises in Sedlescombe Road North, St. Leonards in the late 1950s, convenient for Hastings, Battle and surrounding areas. This allowed for the introduction of beautiful chapels of rest in 1976 creating a dedicated and peaceful environment for families to come and spend time with their relative or friend before the funeral ceremony.
Douglas Mercer & Son Funeral Directors continues to reside at Sedlescombe Road North, St. Leonards with a team dedicated to ‘Pop’s’ original values of providing a personal and respectful experience. Keith Martin has been instrumental in ensuring this continuity of care, having joined the funeral business in 1969 when his uncle, Fred Pomphrey, brought him into the funeral profession. Although Keith retired in December 2010, his love for the business remains and he still arranges and conducts if requested today.
As the reputation of the business has grown and expanded outside of St. Leonards, a second branch was opened in Bexhill-on-Sea in 2012 providing more local facilities to our Bexhill-on-Sea residents. Our extensive facilities and Chapels of Rest were formally opened with a dedication service by Councillor Frances Winterborn, Reverend Peter Timms and Friar Robert Coates.
As an established local business, we remain heavily involved in local community and charity activities.
